It was indeed a DB9 F/F cable that I used. The most embarrassing thing is that I was looking right at the ALIX when I wrote this recipe. This article would have come in handy a few weeks back. :D I got the ALIX 2C3 board. I did most of my stuff in Windows (except the serial communication), so I'll post what I did (based on my recollection) on my site, and then put a link in the comments here later. One question I have for you, in your post you mention for a serial cable "DB9 null-modem cable with a DB9 male on one end, and a DB9 female on the other". Is the 2C1 board a female connector? Because on my computer(s) and 2C3 board, it's all male ends, so it required a DB9 F/F null modem cable. Boy. This article would have come in handy a few weeks back. :D
